Highlighting Buffalo’s Green Side – Historic and Energy Efficient: 49 Johnson Park

By Max Crinnin and Bernice Radle:
The Solar Homes and Green Buildings Tour is ALMOST HERE. On October 1, 2011 from 10am-4pm, you can go to any building on the list (see below) and learn about their green technologies. The tour is free and open to everyone. The kickoff awards party starts at 10am at the Innovation Center (details).
There is no catch, we swear!
Today we are highlighting: Horizon Realty’s Historic Beauty – 49 Johnson Park
Brown is the new green: In 2009, Horizon Realty decided that being energy efficient would help save the earth, save money and most importantly, provide a healthier quality of life for their residents across their portfolio. Fast forward to 2011 and Horizon Realty has retrofitted over 300 units at 16 of its buildings…
The residents of 49 Johnson Park enjoy Downtown Buffalo in century-old style with the perks of energy efficient living (see history). Insulated with deep energy retrofitting techniques, this building is a major energy saver (35% drop in heating costs since renovation) that keeps its residents warm during winter in eco-friendly fashion. Retrofitting the place also saved some cool cash with a new boiler, appliances, lighting, and windows–all highly efficient. Be sure to stop by from 12-4pm on October 1st to take a look at the place in all its green glory.
If you have any questions on this property, please visit on October 1, 2011 from 12 – 4pm.
Be sure to join us for the Tour Kickoff and Awards Ceremony

Sometimes the authors at Buffalo Rising work on collaborative efforts in order to cover various events and stories. These posts can not be attributed to one single author, as it is a combined effort. Often times a formation of a post gets started by one writer and passed along to one or more writers before completion. At times there are author attributions at the end of one of these posts. Other times, “Buffalo Rising” is simply offered up as the creator of the article. In either case, the writing is original to Buffalo Rising.
