Over the next two weeks, we will be bringing you a daily blog post about green buildings in Buffalo. Each building highlighted will be available for you to see for FREE on October 1, 2011 at the WNY Solar Homes and Green Buildings Tour from 10am – 4pm.
While this tour is not limited to the city itself, it is very important to give a HUGE cheer to the city of Buffalo because there are so many great projects within the city limits.
For a full list of tour sites go to www.wnysea.com.
Today we are highlighting Susan Shea’s Geothermal & Solar House.
This residential home was built in 1912 but despite its age, the owners decided to take the giant step of installing geothermal and solar to power their needs. The stucco home is well insulated to reduce the load needed for the geothermal system. The geothermal system installed is a 5 ton closed loop vertical heat exchanger. The house also has a 9kW roof solar PV system.
In addition to the solar and geothermal, the house features rain barrels, energy efficient windows and spray foam wall insulation. This is a great example of a historic home that has successfully implemented energy efficiency and renewable technology. Come learn about this house from 10am – 4pm on October 1, 2011.
