Playing off Steel’s ‘Block Party’ theme, and the importance of neighborhood solidarity, there are other types of initiatives that can be effective year ’round. Just the think of the corners at the end of your street. These are high profile places that are of utmost importance when it comes to presentation. Just as the condition of the houses on the four corners sends a signal to neighbors and visitors, the green space in front of those houses can be used to send important messages.
I always like to see signs that broadcast the presence of block clubs such as the one seen in the photo of the Oxford Square Block Club. There are also opportunities to create welcoming garden beds such as the one located at the corner of Windsor and Forest (top right). One of the more interesting greeting cards that I have seen recently is the metal buffalo found at the corner of Potomac and Richmond. It looks to represent the 400 block of the street. Finally, there are the awesome metal planters at the corner of Richmond and Manchester Place, pictured with lush flowers and an ‘MP’ insignia.
These are just a few examples of creative measures that neighborhoods are taking to instill a sense of pride in residents. It also shouts out to unwanted lurkers that neighbors are committed to investing and protecting their turf. These messages are read loud and clear by anyone visiting… or looking to purchase a house nearby. My street doesn’t have anything like this, but the next street over does. Maybe it’s time…
