If you park your car on the street, and you leave something of value in it, there is always a chance that your car window will be smashed in by some punk. Rarely are these smash-n-grab punks ever caught, and when they are they get a mere slap on the wrist, nothing more. It’s infuriating that petty criminals get away with these types of actions, knowing full well that the consequences are minimal. Hopefully, that’s all about to change.
Common Council has adopted a resolution that classifies vehicle break-ins as a burglary, no longer a petty larceny. In the past, repeat offenders would never have to worry about spending time in jail. What is to prevent a punk from targeting vehicles if the law is lax? It’s about time that this type of public nuisance is given the consideration that it deserves. This is a major quality of life issue that is finally being addressed. The measure must now go in front of the New York State Legislature.
