How do you typically spend a Saturday afternoon? If it isn’t putting together a team of four, using your iPhone or Android to crack QR codes while bouncing around downtown and the waterfront for a chance to win $400 cash…then you’re missing out!
Citybration is taking place next weekend (June 23-26), and there are some great events taking place to showcase our city. We are particularly excited to introduce a new addition to this year’s line up: a QR Coded Scavenger Hunt!
This is a new approach to an old classic. QR codes (Quick Response Codes) look similar to bar codes on most consumer products, but, instead, they are a mosaic-like black image on a white background. These types of codes can be used to store and digitally present various types of media, such as geo coordinates, text and URL links.
For this event, the QR codes will reveal a sequential order of clues and places, exclusively using URL links. The URLs will lead teams to various places downtown or on the waterfront, until the teams ultimately reach their final destination. Teams can download a free app to their smartphone in order to read these codes, and only one smartphone is needed per team. And to make sure there is something for everyone, there will be physical and non-tech challenges along the way to the final destination, in addition to the QR-based clues.
The Hunt will start off at one of the best summer spots in Buffalo: the back patio at Pearl Street Grill & Brewery. Registration and check-in starts at 1:00 p.m., and teams will have 2.5 hours to complete the Scavenger Hunt. Once teams make their way to the finish line, prizes will be handed out, including a cash prize of $400, chartered sailing for four, customized Buffalo swag, various gift certificates, and much more! A prize will also be awarded to the team with the best costume.
So, all you tech savvy individuals currently downloading new apps to your phones, it is time to register for the QR Scavenger Hunt! Register your team here, and have the added bonus of being automatically entered to win the first pitch to the Bisons’ game against the Norfolk Tides on Friday, June 24. Registration is only $20 per team of four.

Buffalo Rising
Sometimes the authors at Buffalo Rising work on collaborative efforts in order to cover various events and stories. These posts can not be attributed to one single author, as it is a combined effort. Often times a formation of a post gets started by one writer and passed along to one or more writers before completion. At times there are author attributions at the end of one of these posts. Other times, “Buffalo Rising” is simply offered up as the creator of the article. In either case, the writing is original to Buffalo Rising.
