Attention all Buffalo runners – the 3rd Annual Pinnacle 5K and one mile fun run/walk is being held on Friday, May 20 at 6 p.m. Not a runner? Not a problem. Supporters can participate in Pinnacle’s Sponsor-a-Student program which helps a student train for and run the 5K. Without this type of support, many students would not have the necessary funds or equipment needed to run in this type of race.
Proceeds from Sponsor-a-Student will not only help the health and wellness of that particular student, but of his/her families as well. The sponsorship includes participation in Pinnacle’s Health and Wellness program. This 16-week program includes at-home training for students and families, along with a weekly Friday meet-up at Delaware Park. The main focus of the Friday meet-up is on having fun and enjoying being outside and the company of others all while staying active. These times allow Pinnacle parents to get to know each other, as well as the students to know and trust other parents.
“We have a rule where no one is allowed to walk alone,” stated Erin Lingle, race director and Pinnacle physical education teacher. This rule keeps everyone safe and creates a sense of community along the Pinnacle students and their families.
In an area that faces a 90% poverty rate, the student sponsorship also gives a Pinnacle student something without which running would not be possible – a pair of running sneakers. A proper pair of running sneakers makes the experience more enjoyable for the student. The Student-a-Sponsorship program helps to reinforce physical activity and wellness in the lives of members of the Pinnacle community and helps to keep students interested in healthy, safe activities.
“Running becomes an inexpensive way for these students and their families to stay healthy.”
Proceeds from the race benefit Pinnacle’s athletics and after-school wellness programs that are designed to keep students active and engaged. To sponsor a student or register for the race, visit www.pinnaclewny.org. Registration is $20 in advance, $25 after May 18. First 150 pre-registered runners will receive an athletic cinch sack. Post-race party will be held at Eberl Iron Works (next to Pinnacle) and includes great music, food and drinks, including Flying Bison beer and soda. For more information, contact race director Erin Lingle at 716.583.3055 or elingle@pinnaclywny.org.
Special thanks to Pinnacle’s 5K sponsors without which this event would not be possible: online thymes, llc, Evans Bank, MidCity Office Furniture, Neil Development, Eberl Iron Works, Elbers Landscaping, John Mouw State Farm Agency, and Maintenance Management Associates.
