GO-Buffalo’s 30 Days of Bicycle Benefits: Theatre of Youth (TOY)

By Green Options Buffalo:

In our series, 30 Days of Bicycle Benefits, you will be introduced to 30 new businesses that will offer you great discounts for riding your bike and wearing your helmet. Thirty businesses that want to say, “Thank you,” for choosing not to drive your car.

Theatre of Youth (TOY) – $5 off your ticket

The Theatre of Youth (TOY) is part past, part future and all Buffalo. The historic Allendale Theatre has been saved and revived by a company that sets its mission on nurturing the next generation of knowledgeable, engaged youth. With seasons that span topics of health, community, safety, respect, play and much more, the Theater of Youth is uplifting the community with one of the most powerful forms of communal expression.

There is nothing quite like the experience of live theatre and in the digital age it is an experience that youth, in particular, are less likely to enjoy. The Theatre of Youth recognizes the unique value of live performance. TOY believes that having a recognizable cast of local actors has a positive impact on the community. The actors on the stage are not commodities like a DVD; they are neighbors expressing the range of their talent by performing relevant material as great entertainers.

An example of that relevant material will be premiering this summer with their wildly imaginative “Heads on Wheels” production that is set to travel all over Western New York. The traveling play tastefully presents the issue of traumatic brain injury and helmet use. It will inform and entertain, and it may just save some lives. The intimacy of real actors presenting real issues is bound to have a great impact.

So support this historic, neighborhood theater that fills its stage with neighborhood actors and it’s rafters with neighborhood technicians. Ride your bicycle with your Bicycle Benefits membership sticker and get $5 off your ticket.

I moved to Buffalo to attend Canisius College in 2007 and began writing for Buffalo Rising as a journalism intern in 2010. Working with Newell and meeting numerous entrepreneurs, activists and everyday folks who were working to make their city better made a huge impact on my decision to stay here. After witnessing all the positive development and grassroots initiatives happening in neighborhoods throughout the city, I was inspired to pursue a term of service in AmeriCorps and a career in Buffalo's non-profit sector. I currently work in the housing department at the Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center of WNY and am excited to be a part of their ongoing efforts to revitalize the Broadway Fillmore neighborhood. I also volunteer as the project coordinator for Artfarms Buffalo. I continue to write for Buffalo Rising because I love having the opportunity to stay connected to those working toward positive changes for the Queen City.
