Submission by Atsuko Mitchell:
One month ago today, with the strongest earthquake ever recorded and the
ensuing tsunami, Japan suffered a devastating tragedy, the effects of
which are still playing out. The Buffalo community has responded with
characteristic generosity and empathy, with one fundraiser after
another, raising money for relief and rebuilding.
Japan Day – Disaster Relief will bring food, music, calligraphy, and
much more Japanese culture to the International Institute of Buffalo
(864 Delaware Avenue) this Saturday, April 16 from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
The Japanese Group of Buffalo would like to share their culture and art
with the wider community both to raise funds for disaster relief and to
express their deep appreciation for the international relief effort. All
proceeds from the event will go to the Japan Society’s earthquake
relief fund. The event is free and open to the public.
For the musically inclined, there will be a performance of the
shakuhachi, the classical Japanese bamboo flute, a Japanese folk dance
group, and choral singing by BNC students. There will also be
demonstrations of kendo, a martial art and ikebana flower arranging. You
can have a taste of macha, the powdered green tea served in the tea
ceremony, and a Japanese sweet for only $1. You can also try your hand
at calligraphy or making your own folded paper crane.
One of the highlights of the day will be a sushi demonstration and
charity luncheon, hosted by Kuni’s, one of Buffalo’s most popular sushi
restaurants. The lunch will include sushi, soba, shumai, and other
Japanese treats. Tickets for the lunch may be purchased at the door for
$15.
