Do you know of a neighborhood in need?

Nicole Melander is new to Buffalo. She works for a company called Deloitte Consulting – a company that organizes a day of service where employees spend a day making a difference in the community. This year Nicole has asked that BRO viewers help to guide the company towards an urban clean up. The idea sounded logical to me, and although I have some of my own ideas regarding neighborhoods in need, I’m leaving it up to you for suggestions. Nicole is hoping that you can be very specific when you suggest an area of the city that is need of a this type of initiative. Also, is there an organization that operates in the area in question? Following is the request from Nicole:

I work for Deloitte Consulting.  The Deloitte Buffalo office does an “IMPACT Day” every June.  All 40 employees will be available for a full day volunteer activity.  I’m looking for ideas on putting the group to “work” for the day. They are most interested in a physical activity — cleaning, painting, gardening, etc. — where all 40 people can be together for the day.  (It is a mix of team building and volunteer work.)  There are really no other parameters. I’d be very grateful if you could suggest a part of the city in need of help while connecting me with some non-profits who would benefit from something like this.

You have the option of either sending Nicole an email or leaving a comment on BRO.

I moved to Buffalo to attend Canisius College in 2007 and began writing for Buffalo Rising as a journalism intern in 2010. Working with Newell and meeting numerous entrepreneurs, activists and everyday folks who were working to make their city better made a huge impact on my decision to stay here. After witnessing all the positive development and grassroots initiatives happening in neighborhoods throughout the city, I was inspired to pursue a term of service in AmeriCorps and a career in Buffalo's non-profit sector. I currently work in the housing department at the Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center of WNY and am excited to be a part of their ongoing efforts to revitalize the Broadway Fillmore neighborhood. I also volunteer as the project coordinator for Artfarms Buffalo. I continue to write for Buffalo Rising because I love having the opportunity to stay connected to those working toward positive changes for the Queen City.
