So often we wait for the things that we want. We wait for others to deliver grocery stores, restaurants, retail, etc. It’s the same with art. Where is all of the public art in Buffalo, other than the pieces that have been on display for decades? Brad Wales has done a yeoman’s job bringing utilitarian art projects to Allentown (see projects), but when it comes to our waterfront, public parks and our commercial districts, there is a real opportunity to make a difference on a small scale level.
While in NYC (road trip for Queenseyes), I came across this simple artistic installation on Park Avenue, placed in front of a creative business. It was certainly eye-catching. It looked to be relatively inexpensive. It was fun and bright and it did a good job in place making. I’m thinking that the people behind this ‘temporary’ installation did not have to apply for a city permit, but then again, even if a permit was necessary it was well worth taking the extra step. Did the business owner commission a local artist? Does Buffalo have art compounds that can tackle these types of projects? Ever heard of Essex Street Arts Center? Without an Arts Council, who is pushing for these types of art initiatives? These types f installations are so important, and we have the talent. What we need is an organization that is designed to connect the artists with the businesses, so that the process is seamless. It wouldn’t hurt to identify funding sources as well.
