Buffalo Big Print will be welcoming former UB environmental studies and photography graduate Alan Winslow, along with Morrigan McCarthy (BA in English Literature from Connecticut College, and did graduate work in Documentary Photography at the Salt Institute For Documentary Studies) to present their collaborative work: Project Tandem.
Project Tandem is the fruit of an 11,000-mile bicycle journey around the United States, made by Winslow and McCarthy in the year 2008. Their mission was to utilize photography to draw attention to the environmental concerns of everyday Americans. Convinced that the media’s portrayals were misleading, they chose to learn about Americans’ feelings on a much more personal, candid level. They interviewed and photographed individuals from 30 states and many, many walks of life to find out what their opinions were on the environment. What they produced was a series of portraits and 1.5 hours of looping audio content of their interviews with these everyday people. The show illustrates the diversity of our nation and our perspectives on the environment.
On Thursday, March 31, Winslow and McCarthy will be giving a lecture and subsequent Q&A session on Project Tandem at the UB North Campus. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Knox 104. On Friday, April 1, they will be hosting the opening of their gallery exhibit at Buffalo Big Print, located at 78 Allen Street. The exhibit will run from 7 to 9 p.m. and will include 23 photos and 1.5 hours of audio content.
There is more work in store for McCarthy and Winslow. Their next project calls for another bicycle ride with their cameras, but this time, they will be traveling around the world. The project, entitled “The Geography of Youth,” will take them 30,000 miles around the globe, through over 50 countries, to document the lives of 20-somethings in this age of technology. They’ll seek to help us create global connections and understand the perspectives of the next generation worldwide. They will be sharing this project via digital postcards on their website.
The lecture and gallery exhibit are being sponsored by the UB Environmental Studies Program, UB Green, and the UB Environmental Network. For more information on Project Tandem or The Geography of Youth, visit the websites.
