When Mark Goldman asked me to come over to take a look at the latest addition to Hardware, called The Back Room, I told him that I had already seen it when it was built out over a year ago. “No, not that back room,” he laughed. “The Back Room.” It turns out that, all along, there was another empty room behind the establishment – a room where the owner of the original hardware store used to live. It consisted of beautiful old hardwood floors, high ceilings, brick walls… the perfect space for a Bohemian acoustic music venue.
The Back Room will be dedicated to poets, musicians, grassroots causes and anyone with an inspirational bent to make Buffalo and Allentown a better place to live. Mark continued to say, “We’re going to be hosting a weekly movie series in The Back Room with a drop screen and built-in projector. It’s a listening room and gallery… a quiet performance area with no sound system. There’s a door that leads to Hardware, with a separate door to the side street, meaning that people can use the space without having it open to the bar and restaurant. They can even use it when Hardware is closed. We’re going to have community groups meet here, and guest speakers – it’s going to add a lot to the area.”
