Like it or not, there is a whole new generation of music lovers who can’t get The Grateful Dead out of their heads. Former Deadheads are passing along their bootlegs to the newly enlightened who are finding out second hand all about the strange journey that so many fans took when Jerry Garcia was leading the band (and fans) on psychedelic road and mind trips. But the bootlegs can only go so far. When it comes to The Dead, Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) is one of the best ways to relive the days of The Dead, or to get a taste of what Jerry and friends were serving up.
“Playing with Dark Star Orchestra is something that feels just exactly like it felt when I was playing with the Grateful Dead.” Donna Jean Godchaux-McKay, Grateful Dead vocalist, frequent DSO guest
Just like their predecessors, Dark Star Orchestra mixes up the music from show to show, though they do attempt to replicate specific shows from over the three decades of performances (over 2300 live shows). After each show DSO announces where and when the original show was played. DSO band members not only sing and play to pay homage to The Dead, they also dress the part and stage themselves just as The Dead would have.
