Recently, the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens opened “The Arcangel Gallery” in memory of local resident Brent D. Arcangel.
Arcangel was a very motivated individual whose life was cut short in a tragic car accident involving a driver who fell asleep at the wheel. This man was known for his belief in “giving life your best every day” and was very proud of being a Western New Yorker. He was an undergraduate and graduate student at the University at Buffalo with a passion for living life to its fullest. His parents, Wayne D. and Corrine Arcangel of Hamburg have donated the gallery to the Botanical Gardens in Brent’s memory.
The Botanical Gardens collaborated with Michael Mandolfo, a local resident and award-wining photographer, to design the space. The Arcangel Gallery is meant to be a space specifically for photography or artwork that represents The Botanical Gardens, its horticulture residents, nature, Western New York, Buffalo architecture, etc. They created the gallery in hopes that local artists could have an opportunity to share their work with the visitors to the Gardens.
Currently, Mandolfo’s work titled “Botanicals: An Alternate View” is on exhibit in the new gallery space. His exhibit centers on the unique beauty and detail found in objects in nature. “My interest lies in exploring nature and creating photo illustrations that invite the viewer to look at everyday objects in a new way,” Mandolfo said.
Like Arcangel, Mandolfo also studied at the University at Buffalo. He has over 25 years of experience in Fine Art Photography and has achieved recognition on both a national and international level. His work has been featured in Times Square, Las Vegas, New York, Europe and Japan. Mandolfo shares a connection with the Arcangel family in that his family also has “an angel watching from above.”
The Arcangel Gallery is now open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is also open for all after-hours events. The Botanical Gardens is currently looking for talented artists and photographers who are interested in showing their work at the Gallery each month.
