Another Kind of Hockey Tournament Coming This December…

With the World Juniors coming to Buffalo this winter, everyone in the city has hockey on their minds.  Thanks to Innovative Concepts in Entertainment (I.C.E.) of Clarence, NY and the organizers of the HockeyTowne USA Fan Fest, hockey fans will now have the chance to participate in their very own competition with the 1st Annual Super Chexx Bubble Hockey World Championships.

The Super Chexx Championships is being hosted in conjunction with the HockeyTowne USA Fan Fest at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.  The tournament will take place on Monday, December 27 for doubles teams and Tuesday, December 28 for singles. Entry for singles is $15 and doubles will be $25.  Two-thirds of the entry fees collected will be paid back to the players as prize money.

The first six rounds of play will run from 12 to 5 p.m., with the finals being held at 7 p.m.  There will be 16 Bubble Hockey tables set up.  Each table will play through the rounds until there is one man or team left standing.  The winners from each table will play each other in the finals to find out who will be declared World Champion.

First-place finishers will take home $3,000 in the singles match and $5,000 for the team who comes out on top in the doubles category.  Cash prizes will also be given to second, third and fourth place finishers in both categories. Everyone who competes in the tournament will also receive free entry to the Fan Fest with the tournament admission fee.

“Everyone has seen our games in arcades, bars or hockey rinks over the years, but most people have never played in, or seen an actual bubble hockey tournament,” said Aaron Petritz of I.C.E. “We believe the fun of competing and chance to win a World Title, along with some cash, will help us make this the largest Bubble Hockey tournament ever held.”

For those not familiar with Super Chexx Bubble Hockey, Petritz gave us the following summary of how the game is played:

“Super Chexx is played much like real hockey, except the players control 5 skaters and 1 goalie using sliding rods that move the men up and down the ice and spin them around.  The object is to score more goals than your opponent over the course of three, 90-second periods and sudden death over-time if needed.  The action is fast and the best players know how to pass, shoot and score goals while using their goalie to keep the puck out of their own net.”

Chexx Bubble Hockey was born here in Western New York, originally developed in Tonawanda in 1982.  The Super Chexx games are still manufactured at the factory in Clarence today.  The history of Super Chexx tournaments goes back to the game’s early days, but this will be the first time in 28 years that I.C.E. has sponsored and hosted a tournament here in Western New York. They hope that hosting this tournament will bring some positive publicity to the Bufffalo area.

“Initially we hope to showcase Super Chexx and celebrate the game, but we also see an opportunity to create a series of tournaments across North America culminating in an annual Bubble Hockey World Championships in Western New York,” said Petritz. “Foosball has national tournaments and governing bodies in North America and Europe.  The U.S. Table Soccer Federation and International Table Soccer Federation host dozens of tournaments with over $250,000 in prizes each year.  Why not bubble hockey and Super Chexx in WNY?  ICE hopes this event will be the catalyst to bigger things and WNY will join us on December 27th to 28th and help us make bubble hockey history.”

All players must be at least 18 years of age and a legal resident of the U.S. or Canada.  To register, go to www.icechexx.com. Same-day registration may be available from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the day of the tournament for any slots that are not sold in advance. For those looking to get a feel for the Bubble Hockey tournament and win great prizes from the Molson Girls, Molson, I.C.E., and Certo Bros. will be hosting a series of promotional tournaments and Molson beer specials every weekend in December.
