Holly Hue is emblematic of renegade fashion.
Combing through the aisles of every thrift store imaginable, masses of hand-me-downs and even modern apparel are dissected, seam to seam, and resurrected into affordable one-of-a-kind pieces.
Founded in 2005, the DIY punk-inspired line of custom made clothing and handbags has branched out to retailers in Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and shops in Washington and Kentucky.
Saturday, October 9, Holly Hue Clothing is bringing it home to Buffalo with the “Sound & Style” Fashion Event 2010 at Club W. Live bands will be perform for each designer’s runway presentation. Performers were hand picked by fashion headliner Holly Hue, catwalking to The Fated Grey. Inlite will be performing for designs by Omi, DJ Drapes will spin alongside Shana Feeley and Artic Death will rock to Katie Gariepy’s fall line. Transmission Dance Party will also be performing.
This is a fashion event that has been tailored by designer Hue to showcase the artistry of her functional deigns. It is going to be a cross-pollination of serious fashion genius and entertainment. In addition to the music talent there will also be a photo booth and tattoo booth.
Hue has been building her brand since her days as a punk rocker in The Hue of Two, developing a self-taught-style, which eventually lead to a full-fledged design career. Her inspiration is derived from people like her mother and other important people in her life.
“It’s not about looking like anyone else,” Hue said. “I want to do my own thing. It is about making something I believe in.”
For Hue, being in Buffalo is the best way to get exposure. There is a level of diplomacy and camaraderie between other designers in the area. Their focus is on making people aware of alternative, affordable fashion, rather than being in direct competition with one another. It is not so cut throat and the glory doesn’t come from sales, it comes from recognition of making something truly unique.
