Unity, the gay-straight alliance of Canisius College, will welcome Ian Harvie to campus on November 2, 2010. Harvie, who underwent a female to male transformation, is an actor and comedian who will discuss his experience as a transgender man, as well as his role in the LGBT community. For the first time in the history of this Catholic institution, Canisius will prove yet again to be a progressive, tolerant and accepting place of higher learning for students in the Western New York area.
Harvie will be touching on a variety of issues, as well as talking about his everyday life, observations on important topics in society, and everyday challenges that we all face on a day-to-day basis. A comedian, Harvie will be adding a touch of humor to his presentation. Currently, in the United States of America, there are over 3 million people who identify as transgender and hopefully, this speaking engagement will help clear up some misconceptions and educate others of this different lifestyle. After his talk, Harvie will take some time to answer questions from the audience.
Canisius College is one of 28 Jesuit Institutions of higher learning in the United States, which places emphasis on social acceptance, diversity, and educating students to be men and women for others, in addition to being leaders in the classroom, in the work environment, and in their communities.
This event is free and is open to the public.
