Post by Sal Sciandra:
Four years ago the lush treescape in the City of Buffalo was devastated by a severe and unseasonable snow storm known as “Lake Storm Aphid”. At the hands of Aphid, 90% of the trees in the City of Buffalo were damaged. Since this natural disaster, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy has made it a priority to replant and restore Buffalo’s trees.
Every Spring and Fall the Conservancy hosts volunteer tree-plantings in the Olmsted Park System. On Saturday Oct 30th the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy will host community tree-plantings in Prospect, Cazenovia, Martin Luther King Jr., and South Parks. In anticipation of these plantings the Buffalo Olmsted Parks will be holding a “Facebook Tree-Hugger Photo Contest”. Entering the contest is easy: Just post a photo of you hugging a tree on our Facebook wall, and on November 1st we’ll announce a winner. The winner will receive a gift basket from the BOPC which includes:
• 1 Year BOPC Membership:
• Free boating on Hoyt Lake
• Free admission to Music @ the Marcy
• Free subscription to “The Leaflet” (Seasonal Newsletter)
• Discounted Admission to select Olmsted Events
• Olmsted T-Shirt
• Bio Degradable Water Bottle
• Travelers mug
• Pack of Classic Olmsted Postcards
So, please volunteer to plant trees with us at the end of October and get out there and start snapping those photos! For more information email volunteer@bfloparks.org or call 716-838-1249 ext 15.
