Tonight Sat. Oct. 23rd Soundlab is putting on a truly unique and diverse bill of contemporary music under the banner Alternate Realities Series: Electronic Pop and Crackle. Headlining the event are experimental music pioneers Harmony Rockets including original Mercury Rev members, Jonathan Donahue, Grasshopper, Suzanne Thorpe and Buffalo’s own Jimy Chambers.
The project born, according to Donahue, from the desire to “kill a Friday night in the mountains” began when they recorded the 41 minute epic “Paralyzed Mind of the Archangel’s Void” at a local Catskills bar in 1995. The resulting recording still resonates today as a swirling sonic excursion bringing to mind Faust, The Velvet Underground , and Miles Davis. Jimy Chambers will also perform with his group Odiorne melding electronics with psychedelic and melodic song craft. In addition, Detroit space rock band Fuxa led by Randall Niemann formerly of Windy and Carl will offer drones, treated guitars and vintage keyboards to create his other worldly pieces. Buffalo based Dotsun Moon will bring their dream beat noir songs to the event while long time sonic adventurer Pam Swarts will grace the audience with her own unique brand of sound manipulation through various keyboards, toys and heavenly vocals.
Rounding out the bill will be dubstep DJ AreHouse, the dance friendly electonica of Shapes of States and the gentle synth pop of Love Scenes. The event begins at 7 pm and costs a very reasonable $10. Not one to be missed!
