Autumn has arrived and WJ Morrissey’s Irish Pub will be welcoming it with their first annual Oktoberfest in the Cobblestone District party from 5 to 8 p.m. on September 24.
The festivities will honor the traditions of the German celebration and will include German food, music, beer, and games. Tents will be set up outside the pub and the patio will also be set up for the party. Cost of admission will be $20 and everyone in attendance will receive a souvenir glass.
The pub will have some seasonal beers on tap, including Flying Bison Buffalo Lager and Oktoberfest. Anyone interested in checking the updated draft list for other choices can visit WJ Morrissey’s Facebook page. They will also be serving two kinds of German sausage, bratwurst and knautwurst, from Spars European Deli. These will be served alongside traditional German potato salad and German mustard. Green salad will be made available for non-meat eaters.
The celebration will also include a farmers market, sponsored by Becker Farms of Gasport, NY. They will be selling a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables.
The source of entertainment for the evening, aside from the music, will be a little friendly competition amongst the partygoers. “We are hosting a Beer Olympics in celebration of the movie Beerfest, the story of two brothers who travel to Germany for Oktoberfest, only to stumble upon a secret, centuries-old competition described as a “Fight Club” with beer games,” said Lindsay McKay, one of the event’s organizers. The competition will include beer pong, flip cup, beer die, team chug, speed quarters, beer straw, and taste test. The movie Beerfest will be played throughout the event. Teams will consist of four people and all participants will receive free 24-ounce “Beer Olympics” mugs and other prizes. Those interested in registering for the competition can email Jason Havens at jhavens@clarkpatterson.com.
Although WJ Morrissey’s has hosted events of all sizes for various occasions, this will be the first year that they have put on an Oktoberfest party. “With this event we are trying to bring more awareness to the area, businesses that are there, and the potential the Cobblestone District has,” McKay said.
WJ Morrissey’s is located at 30 Mississippi Street in Buffalo. Those interested in learning more about Oktoberfest in the Cobblestone District can call 716-852-0930 or check out the event’s Facebook page for more information and updates.
