It was the shop’s sign that first drew me in to Pamela Inc., a women’s clothing and accessory shop on Main Street near the University Campus. It’s not often, in this day and age, that a retailer puts so much time, effort and money into the appearance of a storefront. So often a sign acts as a calling card – “Look at me”, “Here I am”, “I’m open for business”. Combine that with an attractive window display, quality merchandise and plenty of lighting, and a message is broadcast to the neighborhood to stop on in and check out the offerings.
Pam Alexander (left) has taken a small storefront and transformed it into a dynamic presence in an area that you might not think to look for a boutique. Elmwood, Allen and Hertel are usually the first places that clothing stores set up shop. Pam decided that the best course of action was to showcase her unique style along a section of Main Street that would set her apart from the rest of the clothing stores. “We’re here for anyone who appreciates fun, fashionable style,” she told me. “I have a devoted clientele that is happy to see me on Main Street.”
As I was speaking to Pam, one of her devoted clients happened to walk into the shop. Roxey Hatten (right), a marketing consultant for Sheridan Broadcasting Corporation, was more than happy to share her enthusiasm for Pamela Inc., and even offered to stand in the photo in order to help show off some of the merchandise that she had bought on previous shopping excursions. The two women looked great, as did the walls of colorful clothing and purses, cases of designer sunglasses, hats, scarves and the rest. On my way out, I purchased a hat, congratulated Pamela on her new business, and thought to myself, “She’s the type of entrepreneur that will hopefully draw others to the street.” Though there are plenty of businesses in the district, including eateries, book shops and tattoo shops, it’s always nice to have some fashion boutiques to add to the mix. Here’s to being one of the first.
