Reader Submission: Joanna Gillespie
Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center will host its 36th Annual Members Exhibition on Friday, July 30th from 8:00-11:00 p.m. Earlier this summer, Buffalo Rising caught up with Hallwalls Visual Arts Curator, John Massier, to discuss this year’s rather enigmatic and playful theme, “Faster Pussycat, Spill! Spill!” Any current member of Hallwalls is invited to submit artwork (and non-members may join Hallwalls when submitting artwork) for inclusion in the show “about oil, about spillage, about cats, about fast cats, about faster cats…,” Massier explained. Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public.
What makes this year’s Hallwalls Members Exhibition extra special is the addition of a pre-event picnic, dubbed Faster Pussycat, Grill! Grill! The Members Exhibition has always been a time for member artists to socialize with each other alongside friends and family. To better embrace the sense of community surrounding this annual event, Hallwalls has teamed up with BW’s Smokin’ Barrels BBQ of Blasdell, NY to host a barbecue pre-party before the members exhibition. From 6:00-9:00 pm Hallwalls and BW’s will be serving barbecue chicken, ribs, rolls, and summer salads. BW’s will be cooking on site as guests soak up the quintessential summer barbecue aromas. This casual, buffet style dinner will be held outside in the rear Hallwalls parking lot, and will include a cash bar with icy cold beer, wine, soda and water.
This will be a great opportunity to enjoy a fun summer cook-out while meeting some of the Hallwalls member artists. But don’t wait until July 30th to get your Hallwalls BBQ tickets at the door, because after July 26th only a very limited number of tickets will be available. You can reserve your BBQ tickets on the Hallwalls website, get them in person at Hallwalls, or call 716-854-1694 and order by phone. Tickets are $10.00 (adults) and $5.00 (children). This event will be held rain or shine (inside Asbury Hall in the event of rain) and is open to the public.
