The crass but always fun Bitch is coming to the Ninth Ward on July 7th
as part of a tour that celebrates her newest album Blasted! The woman’s
powerful pipes and guttural sounds make this pop-reminiscent record a
sonic jump from her previous work that mixes her love of record
production with her signature electric-violin-poetic-rock, an outgrowth
of new-found creative spirit and a real labor of love. Blasted! is said
to be the most personal and confident recording of her career with haunting
melodies unflinchingly honest lyrics. Bitch plays
electric violin like a rock guitar, along with the bass and ukulele, and
adds layers of unique instrumentation to create a sonic symphony. The
strong vocalist continues to push the envelope with her wild-spirited
avant-garde “theatrical punk” music.
A classically trained violinist, Bitch has seen notoriety in the
squeaky clean suburbs, experimental flicks in NYC and the outskirts of
Detroit and Chicago. Bitch’s unconventional and outspoken approach to
performance caught the attention of a number of indie luminaries. She
took fiddling lessons with Andrew Bird and serendipitously stumbled upon
her future co-conspirator, Animal, at acting school. Together the two moved
to New York to make their own ‘theater’. The duo recorded and toured
with our beloved Ani DiFranco who also released their first few records
through Righteous Babe. This association along with Bitch and Animal’s out-of-the-ordinary message
yielded an international following of left-of-center listeners and an
entire generation of gender non-conformists.
Bitch went on to release her first solo album on the legendary Kill
Rock Stars label, entitled Make This/Break This, a record that charted
rockier terrain and earned her critical success. The tour that followed
helped establish her reputation as an energetic, powerhouse performer,
whose live shows mixed strong vocal prowess with a penchant for
idiosyncratic musical instruments. In 2008, Bitch set out independently,
launching her own record label, Short Story Records, along with a side
project, the group Bitch and the Exciting Conclusion. She is currently
touring the US to promote Blasted!, making a fervent stop in Buffalo to
pay homage to the place helped launch her career.
