Buffalo is a city full of great architecture. I’ve taken thousands of pictures in recent years of downtown and the waterfront, striking vistas, industrial ruins, stately mansions, beautiful churches, working class neighborhoods and everything in between. Most of us are familiar with our architectural landmarks, but do we really pay attention to the detail found on the buildings we oftentimes take for granted? It’s the mosaic of the good, the bad and the ugly that make up Buffalo’s cityscape.
Yesterday’s Answer: St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church Lyceum, 215 Broadway at Milnor.
This three-story, 27,000 sq.ft. beauty is a designated Buffalo landmark. It has been owned by Belmont Contracting since 1991. St. Mary’s church was destroyed by fire in late-1986 and was later demolished. Several single-family homes have been built on the former church property fronting Pine Street. The church’s convent was demolished in 1990. The Lyceum appears to be vacant, reuse likely complicated due to its neighbor, the City of Buffalo Broadway Garage.
