It almost goes without saying that any meal at The Hatch is made all the more pleasant by taking a stroll
around the Marina’s
gardens and gazing wistfully out over the water at the lighthouse. Or, if you head in the opposite direction, a brisk walk down to Emerald
Beach and a climb up the observation
tower will work off most of the calories accompanying your meal.
The other patrons also make it a pleasant stop–there are people here soaking up the sun and a good book, playing quiet acoustic
instruments or visiting with a friend. The waterfront is a melting pot of
folks all looking for the same thing–some peace and quiet, fresh air
and maybe a little lunch or a cone.
While the food served here isn’t the best of its kind, and the prices
aren’t particularly high or low, The Hatch continues to provide workaday
city folk with good food served lakeside all summer long. In my family,
we always kick the warm season off with a hot dog and an ice cream cone
at this little waterfront eatery.
The Hatch’s fries and onion rings are particularly enjoyable, and the
dogs and burgers are decent. They also offer a few breakfast options for
early risers, and a full fish fry on Friday nights. Heck, they even
serve wine (the quality of which I cannot vouch for)!
Service is streamlined and generally friendly–lunch at The Hatch is a great way
to enjoy our liquid assets and soak up a little sun on your lunch break.
If you’re going for a quick bite on a particularly beautiful day,
expect there to be a bit of a line, but if you have the time, there’s plenty of seating and
the view may well be worth the wait.
