It all started with a walkabout in Allentown to discuss the need for public art. A few days later an artist was busy painting boarded up windows. Next came the wheat pastes. These two projects led to a third work of art fabricated by Doug Sargent, who saw that there was a need for creative eye candy “… in the most unexpected places.” This particular recycled sculpture was made for the Garden Walk, though Doug was not sure where it would ‘fit’ best. One phone call to Liz Kolken at Quaker Bonnet Eatery and the problem was solved. Liz owns the neighboring property with the most beautiful garden on it (also home of The Massage Studio). It just so happens that the site of the sculpture is also on the Garden Walk.
That’s three works of art to spring up in time for this year’s Garden Walk. Hopefully these will lead to more artistic projects in coming months. If you have any suggestions for the effort, please email me. If you would like to see more of Doug Sargent’s work, please visit his website. More of Doug’s work can be seen in person at Urban Roots Garden Cooperative. If you don’t live in the area, consider coming down to visit during one of Allentown’s First Fridays events.
