From reader Chris Van Patten:
Hey everyone! My name is Chris Van Patten, and I’m the founding
artistic director of Continuum Theatre Company. We’re a new theatre
company formed by UB students with the goal of presenting contemporary
plays and musicals in Buffalo.
In April, Continuum presented a cabaret of songs
from up-and-coming and unknown musical theatre composers at Merge called
“Quarter-Life Crisis”. It was a success (Colin Dabkowski called it
“tres impressive”), and we want to present it again in a larger venue
relatively near the theatre district during Curtain Up! weekend.
Unfortunately we’re all either new to Buffalo or from the suburbs, so
we’re clueless about local performance spaces.

The venue doesn’t need to be a typical theatre – we
only need lights and power and we’ll fill in the rest (audio,
instruments, singers, all that jazz). In fact, spaces that aren’t
typical theatres would be great! “Quarter-Life Crisis” is a unique show
presenting unknown music, and it’d be great to perform in a unique and
unknown space. For example, Buffalo Rising recently posted pictures of
an auditorium at the top of the Electric Tower (apparently disassembled)
that would be exactly what we’re looking for. That space even had a
stage and seating risers, but that would be a luxury. Because this is
just a cabaret we can be very flexible – as long as we have lights,
power, and proximity to the theatre district, we’ll be happy (of course
if there are any empty theatres, that would be great – doubtful though
during Curtain Up!).

Any suggestions you have would be greatly
appreciated. Even if you think it’s crazy and impossible, suggest
anyway. It might seem crazy to you, but it might seem awesome to us! If
you actually own a space you want us to look at, email me directly – chris@continuumtheatre.com
– I’ll get back to you ASAP. Thanks so much!
