Recently Hallwalls announced that it was accepting submissions for its upcoming Members Exhibition, themed Faster Pussycat, Spill! Spill! Spill! We decided to ask John Massier, Hallwalls’ Visual Arts Curator, a few questions about the upcoming event, whose theme encourages work “about oil, about spillage, about cats, about fast cats, about faster cats….”
Buffalo Rising: Why does Hallwalls offer a members exhibition?
John Massier: While Hallwalls exhibits artists from both WNY and around the world, the members’ exhibition is an additional opportunity, particularly for local artists, to participate and get their work out to an audience.
BR: What’s with this year’s theme?
JM: If you don’t get the reference, you’ll have to ask someone. (or google Russ Meyer), but I think most people will “get” it. It’s a pun on a b-movie title, that enables us to use the word “spill” and suggest a potentially topical theme. Then again, there are many interpretations of “spill” outside of what’s happening in the Gulf as we speak. We never know how the theme will play out until artists drop off their works. The title/theme is meant to be an allusive point of departure for artists to consider when submitting their work. Some of the most exciting members exhibitions happens when more people incline toward a work that can be framed/interpreted within the suggested theme. Some artists really enjoy this element, others prefer to just submit a current work.
BR: What themes has Hallwalls used for its Members Exhibition in the past?
JM: Casino Boogie. (when the downtown casino issue broke)
700 Main Redux (when we were temporarily located to 700 Main (a previous HW home) while our current space was renovated)
Future Artemi (when the Knox deaccession issue was hot, Artemi being the presumed plural of Artemis)
Karma Cab Boa (an acronym for Barack Obama)
BR: Are the pieces typically for sale?
JM: Most pieces are for sale. Some artist submit works NFS. Hallwalls NEVER takes a cut of any artwork sold from our gallery.
BR: What will the fee be to attend the exhibition?
JM: To participate with a work in the show, an artist needs to be a member and the cheapest artist membership is $25. There is never any cost to attend an exhibition, either at the opening or during the show. EXHIBITIONS ARE ALWAYS FREE TO ATTEND!
