For the last few years I’ve had the distinct pleasure of being a judge at the annual pie contest that is held in conjunction with the Rediscover Amherst Street festival. The neighborhood has undergone so many changes since then, and the pies get better every year. This year I will be joined by fellow judges and pie aficionados, Nelson Starr of All-Access Pass, as well as neighborhood baker, Shandra Beutner of Carriage Trade Pastries (we recently covered her killer sticky buns, if you’ll remember).
ANYONE can enter, as long as they aren’t a pro. Pies must be delivered to Assumption Church on Amherst Street by 10a.m. on Saturday, June 19th. Judging begins at 10:30 and prizes will be given to the bakers of the three best pies. After the judging process is complete, the pies are sold slice by slice to raise money for the organization. This is an old county fair-style contest where pies of all shapes and sizes are entered.
We look forward to seeing who will enter and win this year! Politician Maria Whyte has taken top honors numerous years in a row. Her pies are delicious, but we know there are a lot of other talented bakers out there, so bring your best pie down and see if you’ve got what it takes!
