A few of our local salons have gotten together to do something about the latest oil spill. It’s a bit unusual, and it’s not going to solve the environmental disaster, but it will hopefully play a small part in the ultimate recovery. I first learned about the effort to collect hair from James Hickey of Chez Ann Salon (photo). He told me that Amanda Robinson of The New Age Salon had contacted him regarding the unusual measure. “She asked me if I would be willing to collect the hair that was being swept away,” said James. “I told her that it sounded like a great idea.”
Amanda reached out this morning in hopes that BRO viewers would think about the oil spill the next time they got a haircut. “I found out from a friend of mine who asked me to start collecting hair for him,” she told me. “At first I thought that he wanted me to collect the hair for his garden (apparently that is not as unusual as it sounds). Then I learned that it was for the oil spill. My heart sank when I first saw the spill on TV. I grew up in a very environmentally conscious family. So when I heard about the effort to collect hair, I thought that it was necessary to spread the idea to other salons in hopes that they would also participate.”
From an email that Amanda sent out this morning:
“We’re sure you have heard about the tragic spill of oil this past earth day. They are still working on stopping the leak, and we can work on it from our angle. Hair and natural materials are sponges to oil and they need as much as they can get. Starting this week, The New Age Salon will be collecting hair clippings and sending them off in true NAS fashion, recycled boxes. There are appointments available, even if it’s just a trim or you can spare some length, this is the only earth we’ve got. Come on in and we’ll trim or chop your locks. It’s good karma.
