Fashion Rocks… And so do Sue Morreale and Jeanne Mulkey.
Morreale and Mulkey are the co-founders of Fashion Rocks…For a Cure, an event dedicated to raising funds for Roswell Park Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Research & Education.
What started out, as a ‘Sex in the City’ themed mini-auction three years ago, has since become one of Buffalo’s most anticipated social events. Rock-star local celebrities from Janet Snyder, Lydia Dominick to Ryan Miller all lend a hand to help support Morreale and Mulkey.
Shop, rock and roll this Thursday, May 6 at Nektar Restaurant (451 Elmwood Ave.) starting at 6PM. Tickets are $35 and include complimentary hors d’oeuvres and swag bags loaded with gifts and goodies from New Era Cap Co., REEDS Jewelers, Delta Sonic and many more. All of the event proceeds are donated to Roswell Park Cancer Institute Breast Cancer Research & Education.
“Roswell was really good to me. This was my chance to give back. I have so many friends that are, and were going through, breast cancer. Everybody has been touched in some way,” said Morreale. “I want more research and education for breast cancer.”
Beyond the style and class, of Fashion Rocks…For a Cure, is the overwhelming sense of strength and personal connection. It is not about the clothes or the auction, but the cause. Mulkey’s passion derives from her grandmother; mother and sister all of whom have battled breast cancer. Both women stress the importance of making it a positive, uplifting and fun night for the supporters, the fighters and the survivors.
“Women need to stick together. This is about saving lives. It is so important to know your body, to be in charge of your own health, and to be your own advocate,” said Morreale.
The event, which in the past has raised more than $17,000, with 550 attendees, will include a silent auction, Chinese auction and the fashion show.
Fashions from local Elmwood Avenue businesses like Splash Panic and even the buzzed about local designer Balef Clothing will be modeled. Blum’s Swimwear & Intimate Apparel will be showing some of 2010’s hottest beach trends and Morreale, owner of Lotions & Potions, has models rocking the runway in sexy lingerie from her Elmwood shop.
Expect to see some non-traditional four-legged models. Maria, an adoptable rescue dog, will be modeling pet apparel from Elmwood Pet Shop. The evening will also feature musical performances by Mirage and chance, for someone really lucky, to win a REEDS diamond ring somewhere inside a loaded gumball machine.
A separate but special Lotions & Potions fashion auction will be held for the PROI Foundation, to support scientific research, education and grant money for people that want to move on in the medical field. It is also in support of for those who might not otherwise be able to afford medical treatment.
As if that was not enough to encourage you to go, Village Desserts will also be providing breast cancer ribbon cookies, too delicious to pass up!
“This event is so personal to me,” said Morreale. “It is amazing how many people are pitching in and supporting the cause.” She attributes a large amount of the events’ success to her daughter Ciara Morreale, a vital coordinator for the fashion show. “She is my right arm.”
That only reassures Morreale’s motto for strong women, “May we raise them, may we know them, may we be them.”
