The former Birchfield’s has just undergone an extreme makeover and is now spotless and ready to do business under new ownership. Now called Coco’s, the restaurant is out to make a name for itself as a burger and wing destination on Main Street. I don’t think it’s going to have a problem attracting customers, as the place has been brought back to life and looks like a new restaurant. What’s especially nice, is that upon entering the establishment, one would think that it has looked that way for 75 years – very impressive.
The interior has a working fireplace, and a smaller wall unit at the bar. There are antiques and curiosities hanging just about everywhere – old lamp standards that light up, an electric rotating weather vane and a round tabletop bar with a lit fountain in the middle (from the old Executive Club/Playboy Club). There are two levels of seating (I had no idea the place was so big), a patio, flatscreen TVs and plenty of seating at the bar. If you’re a fan of places like Gabriel’s Gate on Allen, then you will love this place.
Coco’s will only be open for dinner (starting this Wednesday) and will NOT be a nightclub. I spoke to one of the workers there earlier today and she told me that they have been working on getting the place ready since last August. Apparently it was destroyed and need to be completely overhauled, from bar stools to floors. Everything has been rebuilt and restored. Food offerings will be standard bar fare, serving soups, salads, burgers and wings, and the rest of the comfort food items that can be found around town… but not on this section of Main Street. I am really looking forward to checking out Coco’s this Wednesday. I’m also happy to see such a fine looking establishment suddenly spring up, in a part of the city that could certainly benefit from having a nice eatery in its midst. It’s too bad that Coco’s wasn’t open for Obama’s visit… I bet he would have loved it!
