As more and more layers are being shed while the weather becomes more forgiving, the scarf remains, as one of the most chic carry-through items of the season. Scarves take on a whole new personality for spring, worn with more utility as a multi-tasking accessory. Worn flurry and free, scarves tie in beautifully with the notion of romantic dressing that swept NYC runways for Spring and Summer 2010, yet the more sporty and ‘beachy’ versions of the piece were in abundance as well.
Take on the romantic look by framing your face with scarves worn as headbands for spring. From Marc Jacobs to Milly, models’ heads were adorned with colorful sashes tied into quirky bows, giving the right amount of punch to the ‘flowy’, more breezy pieces in the collections. Wearing the same idea to the beach is an equally fun idea! Look to Lacoste and Rosa Cha for inspiration.
* Slide show is a mix of NYC runway and Buffalo Boutique
Rosa Cha featured the wrapped headscarf as a sporty-chic accessory to keep cool in bright yellows and oranges, giving a perky lift to the black and white ensembles. At Lacoste, artistic director Christophe Lemaire’s mantra was “Simple, sporty chic” where the looks were boardwalk ready and scarves were used as head wraps.
*Model: Alexis Joyce Quinn: White Ruffled blouse, available at Anna Grace. Black Ruffled skirt, by local designer, Stylist Zone. Vintage scarf made into a bow tie, a conversation mascot- No retailer. Hair accessory and red framed glasses available at Clutch. Styled by Molly Hoeltke hair by Lisa Burke at Bellezza Salon, and make up by Andrew Brown at Salon Rouge.
The scarf’s most common use was seen at Ann Taylor, wrapped around the neck and paired with a crisp, tailored blazer. The same look is taken a step up when worn as an ascot. Look to Anna Sui in this case, who chose to use scarves in charming prints and punchy colors, channeling a cool sixties-take-on-Victorian-menswear feel.
From the Runways of NYC Fashion Week to the streets of Buffalo, channel your own inspiration with one of the hottest accessories of the season! Use the scarf as means to punch up an outfit with a pop of color, or be completely practical and wear it to keep warm on cool spring nights. In the spirit of fashion, make it your own!
