Last summer I posted on the possible freeing of some waterfront access at two particular sites – the seaplane ramp at LaSalle Park and the ice boom beach at the Outer Harbor (see post). Yesterday this image was sent to BRO documenting the removal of the ice boom, and the relocation to its new home along the Buffalo River. This is great news for the Outer Harbor (hopefully), because if you are at all familiar with the previous home of the ice boom, then you know that it always sat on a sandy beach – one of the only beaches within urban limits.
The beach in question is found directly next to Times Beach Nature Preserve. That means that there could be an interesting relationship between the two waterfront amenities – a relationship that until this time has been squandered. Just think of walking down the Times Beach boardwalks out to the water’s edge and discovering a beach… it’s there! The Outer Harbor bike trail leads right to the location, and if plans ever do move forward with freeing up of Coast Guard property for public use (see post), this whole area could be a comprehensive destination filled with trails, blinds, boardwalks and a beach.
