Looking forward to this summer’s blockbuster comic book movies? Looking for something fun to do, but don’t have a lot of money to spend? Want to help support an independent local business? This Saturday, May 1st is Free Comic Book Day, and local institution Queen City Bookstore is celebrating.
Free Comic Book Day is a day–always the first Saturday in May–when independent comics shops across North America give out comics for free. The event is put together by publishers, distributors, artists, and shops throughout the comics industry, and Queen City has been a
part of the event since it started ten years ago.
“It’s a really fun day,” says Queen City owner, Emil Novak. “A lot of parents who used to collect comics bring their kids in. It’s a great activity.” The all-ages, rain or shine event will be held during regular store hours, but it is first come, first serve, so come early.
“The store’s really packed from 11 to about 5 or so. We probably see about three-hundred people that day.”
Queen City Bookstore will have a variety of special Free Comic Book Day comics to give out, including “Iron Man,” and “Superman” comics as well as a variety of independent comics as well.
