Crystal Beach may not be ours, but there are many Buffalonians for whom Bay Beach remains the last vestige of a beloved summer get-away.
A proposal by the Molinaro Group from Burlington to build a 12-story condominium is riling a lot of Canadian citizens, including the Friends of Crystal Beach, who have posted billboards that read: “Say no to private development on your waterfront,” and who plan to be at tonight’s council meeting in number.
The meeting will begin at 6PM in Town Hall Council Chambers at 1 Municipal Drive in Fort Erie (just past the intersection of Highway 3 and Buffalo Road).
Bay Beach is a gem, and it’s no surprise that this weighty plan that would cut the public off from a tract of waterfront is meeting with heavy opposition. The development would depend on the town fathers passing an amendment to zoning laws, as the land is now zoned for public use. And though the developers have offered concessions to public beach users, such as parking, bathrooms and changing rooms, the fear is that it would spur more and more condo development in the future.
The town planner, on the other hand, would like to see more condo development.
