The Ice Ball, the New Year’s Eve party at the Statler this year, according to founder Steve Poland, could likely the last event occurring before the Statler gets mothballed in January and officially closes.
“Likely for years, much like The Central Terminal, AM&A’s building, The Aud, and other historic Buffalo landmarks,” Poland says. “Today there will be a hearing where the trustee of the Statler is going to recommend shutting it down, which would take place in January,” according to Poland. [Note: The terminal and AM&A’s are enjoying a reincarnation.]
Poland says his Ice Ball “has now kind of twisted into a ‘going out’ party for the Statler. People that haven’t been there in years should be coming out to say good-bye to one of the great historic Buffalo venues.”
Poland wants Buffalo to know that tickets are still available and will be sold at the door as well (although price goes up at the door to $100 cash/check). Still, he says, a $20 discount code exists using ‘BYESTATLER’, making general admission tickets just $75, including all alcohol for the evening.
“We have a magician, a balloon twister, a photobooth, a midnight buffet, professional photographers taking cheezy prom-like photos, a confetti white-out at midnight, the first marriage proposal of 2010 at midnight, free coat check, and free valet parking!” Poland says.
