Florence
Johnson of Buffalo has been elected president of the New York State School
Boards Association (NYSSBA). Her one-year term begins Jan. 1, 2010.
The election
took place Saturday, Oct. 17, at NYSSBA’s Annual Business Meeting in New York
City. A total of 276 voting delegates participated in the business meeting,
which was held in conjunction with the Association’s 90th Annual Convention
attended by nearly 3,000 members of the education community.
“We as school
board members must lead the way by action, word and deed,” said Johnson, who
chose “empowerment – through education for opportunity and success” as her
presidential theme.
Johnson
currently represents the Conference of Big 5 School Districts on NYSSBA’s Board
of Directors. She served six terms as vice president of NYSSBA and was first
appointed to the board in 2000. Johnson is a former president of the Buffalo
City Board of Education, of which she has been a member for 15 years.
