Ujima Theater, at 545 Elmwood Ave presents a special performance of “Do You See What I’m Saying” On Thursday, Sept 24, to benefit the Homeless Alliance of Western New York. Tickets are $35, and can be purchased at wnyhomeless.org or by calling 853-1101.
Based on personal interviews with homeless women living on the streets of Chicago, Do You See What I’m Saying? is, according to Chicago Magazine and Arts Weekly, “A heartbreaking lyric poem …” but Megan Terry also recognizes the
humor in the human situation and highlights the nobility that can
survive all kinds of blows to the human spirit.
“The action transpires
over the course of one early morning as we meet Copper Queen, a down
on her luck prostitute; B.A. and Crissie, two enterprising
prospectors/garbage pickers; Mychelle and Himilce, one drug addict who
wants to get clean and one who doesn’t;
Valrave, a super intense, burned out sex kitten, and Sunny, a pregnant
woman who shouts out sermons which shame and threaten the existing
order of power – the culprit who undermines the human spirit.”
What excites me about this performance, besides the fact that it is raising money for a fantastic organization, is that it is based on real-life interviews, rather than the caricatures we might imagine homeless people to be. Go to learn, go to be inspired, go to be entertained, or go to support the Homeless Alliance. Whatever your reason, get a ticket, and to the Ujima Theater!
UNRELATED NOTE: There will be no “Theological Thursday” post today. My apologies–I simply do not have time to write a good one this week. My recommendation? Take the time you may have spent reading,thinking, or arguing, and do something good! If you really want a theological lesson/discussion, you’ll have to join me at Lafayette Church for my review of “The Secret Message of Jesus” (7PM tonight, at the corner of Lafayette and Elmwood).
