In 2004 or so, I played with my then-band down
in Monticello, NY, just outside of the original Woodstock site in Sullivan
County. I was unaware until then
that the site of the concert was not in the same place as the town of
Woodstock, which has come to be one of my favorite road trips since my first
visit that summer. Since we were
close to the site of the show, we decided to check it out for ourselves.
When we arrived, we found a classic hippie
sitting on a rock (see photo) who asked, “Is it over?” He showed us his tattoos
(not all of them, surely and thankfully) and a picture he had with him of the
same land only with the Woodstock crowd on it many moons before.
can get to this site in under six hours by car. Maybe “Duke Devlin” is still hanging around, and
he’ll show you around the lot.
Meanwhile, is anyone in town going to screen the movie for the anniversary this coming week? Could be a fun party.
