Looking for something to do this weekend? The hustle and bustle of summer in Buffalo is going strong this weekend, and you’ll have to plan carefully to even scratch the surface of all of the fun things that are happening. Be sure to check the entertainment and events tabs for more goings-on, but this should get you started.
Friday, August 7th:
See “The Tragic and Horrible Life of the Singing Nun,” a play inspired by the true story of a Belgian nun who becomes a pop star, at the BUA Theatre (119 Chippewa Street) at 8 PM. A second performance will take place on Saturday night, same time and place.
Take an evening tour of Frank Llyod Wright’s Martin House conservatory and pergola. The 90-minute tour begins at 7 PM. Tickets are $20. For reservations, please call 716.856.3858.
Attend the “Full Moon Stroll” at the Tifft Nature Preserve (1200 Fuhrmann Boulevard) from 8:15 until 9:45 PM. The cost is $5 per person for non-members. To register, please call 716.896.5200 ext. 338.
Stop by for “Opening Night” at College Street Gallery Co-op (244 Allen Street) as part of the Allentown First Fridays Gallery Walk from 8 PM to 10 PM. Paintings by David Pierro will be on view through Sunday, August 30th.
See more art at Buffalo Big Print (78 Allen Street), another participant of the First Fridays Gallery Walk, from 6 PM until 9 PM. The opening will feature “Frank Gehry Chair Sculpture” by Ben Perrone, “Collage/Drawings 1970’s” by Adele Cohen and “Attic Oil Paintings” by Greg Kuppenger. The works will be shown through Wednesday, September 2nd.
Saturday, August 8th:
Join friends and meet new people at the “Community Potluck,” sponsored by Latin American Cultural Association (LACA), at El Buen Amingo (114 Elmwood Avenue) from 7 PM to 9 PM. Guests are welcome to bring food and drinks to share. Live music will be performed by local musicians. Also, meet Chuck Inorvaia, the famous “Bubble Man” known for blowing bubbles into the Allentown streets! For more information, please call 716.885.6343.
Grab three of your friends, hit the streets and search for a obscure items during the Buffalo Scavenger Hunt from noon until 5 PM. Win great prizes! Admission is $25 per person, which includes the hunt and after party. Proceeds will benefit Camp Good Days.
Ride your bike for a good cause. The 3rd Annual “Motorcycle Run for the Homeless,” a 50-mile run sponsored by the Buffalo City Mission, starts at noon in Gratwick Park (River Road in Tonawanda). Enjoy barbecue, live music, biker action and an award ceremony. Registration begins at 11 AM with a donation of $20 for bikers and $10 for passengers.
There’s another charitable event this weekend for all of the bikers out there. The first annual “Cruisin’ for Kidneys Motorcycle Dice Run” begins at 10 AM, starting at the International Association for Firefighters Buffalo Local 282 Union office (255 Delaware Avenue). This event, organized by the Buffalo and North Tonawanda professional firefighters unions, will benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Western New York. Help find a cure for breast cancer with the Buffalo Federation of Women’s Clubs at the “Second Annual Fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Awareness Garden.” The event will be held at the Buffalo Central Terminal (495 Paderewski Drive) from 1 PM until 5 PM. A $15 ticket, available for purchase at the door, will include wine tasting, silent auction, basket raffle, farmers’ market, live music by the Pocket Change Trio and a complimentary wine glass.
Sample over 100 microbrews from around the world at the “Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center’s Buffalo Brewfest.” This year’s beer party will be held at HSBC Arena (1 Seymour Knox III Plaza) from 2 PM until 6 PM. Tickets ($30 pre-sale and $40 at the door) will give guests access to two floors of brewers, an outdoor tasting tent, 20 beer tickets, a souvenir sampling glass, great food and live entertainment by Black Widow Band. Find a great summer read about crime, scandal and mystery at the “Buffalo Book Fair Event” that will be held at the Buffalo Central Library (1 Lafayette Square) from 1 PM until 5 PM. Sunday, August 9th:
Pedal through waterfront trails on the “Outer Harbor Expedition.” A guide will take guests on a 3-hour bicycle tour and discuss water quality, waterfront projects and other environmental issues.
