Any self-respecting Buffalo Bills fan knows that this is the 50th season of their rich, somewhat painful history. (1960-2009. The math is confusing for some. Just think about it.) Anyway, in order to pay proper homage to our team, the Bills and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society are pooling resources to provide an extensive football exhibit, set to run from Sunday, August 9, 2009, to February 7, 2010.
The exhibit will display such unforgettable Bills moments as Mike Stratton’s 1964 “hit heard ’round the world,’ and 1993’s Comeback game.
(Mike Stratton’s famous hit)
There will also be a timeline featuring each season, and sections highlighting the players, coaches, staff, stadiums, fans, and even Ralph Wilson. Expect to interact with your surroundings in the simulated locker room, the do-it-yourself play-by-play announcer booth, or chill in a fan basement, take electronic trivia quizes, and vote on your favorite season, players, and games. I’ll probably spend a few weekends there.
Over 500 hundred artifacts will be on display, jerseys including the last-known existing silver and blue jersey from the 1960 and 1961 season, and a game-worn Marv Levy jacket.
Many items are on loan from Greg Tanter, a Massachusetts based collector, generally regarded as the owner of the most extensive Bills collection on the planet.
This Sunday’s grand opening goes from 1 PM to 4PM, and includes free hot dogs and pop, as well as photo ops with Billy Buffalo.
