By Tommy Stanford
Rock and
roll in its most pure, rooted-in-blues form has always come and gone, ebbed and
flowed, fallen by the wayside, if only to return fresher and clearer. It
is easily the most overcooked yet always-palatable form of popular music,
seemingly leapfrogging musical generations, but always landing back on its
feet. So it should be of no surprise as to its current
post-Emo/Nickelback resurgence, not only in the bowels of the American music
scene (or what’s left of it, as it stands), but as a steady force right in
front of our eyes here in Buffalo. Over the last few years, a number of
young, blues-rock based acts have emerged in the downtown circles as a
movement, gracing the few original-friendly club stages left standing.
One of those
bands is The Found (left), who will release their second full-length effort entitled “Two,” tomorrow night, August 22, at Mohawk Place. Their sound finds its base in
that classic Maximum R&B feel, and can be compared to the likes of early
Deep Purple, Spooky Tooth, and the Rolling Stones era-Beggars Banquet.
Though the band has
actually played out the better part of a decade already, it continues to refine
and redefine its sound as lineups change, and writing styles sink in. The
Found’s current lineup features your standard drums, bass, and guitar, but
highlighted by a bevy of driving organ, keys and vibes, along with an auxiliary
percussionist. And oh yeah, they all sing. Together. A lot.
To further
showcase our community of good ol’ rock and roll, and why you should all discover
it for yourselves (no pun intended, assuredly), the quintet has asked two of
its peer figureheads to accompany them over the course of the evening.
This includes Handsome Jack (above), the whirlwind of Marshall-powered-riffs and banshee calls, and arguably the entire
movement’s mainstay kings, Johnny Nobody (below), a trio that conducts hooks likely to never leave your
head.
Doors open
at 9 PM, and admission to the event is $10, which automatically puts a copy of Two
right in your hands. Johnny
Nobody opens, followed by the Found, and Handsome Jack will close the evening. And
it’s at Mohawk Place, which is where so many of Buffalo’s finest original bands
through the years have called “home”. Maybe once you get a
taste of what’s cooking around here, you’ll do the same.
