Captain Jack’s Fish & Chips opened for business last week, and it’s already going strong. A welcome addition to this block of Elmwood, it’s good to see this newly renovated storefront finally in use, and in a great way.
For those of you worried about parking on this very busy block of Elmwood, know that there is curbside pick-up service for those who want their fish on the fly, with a call-ahead order.
The patio was bustling this weekend, and they were working hard (and efficiently) to keep up with orders, both eat-in and takeout. We caught up with Dr. Mike Calabrese (he of Parish Commons, reopening tomorrow) and his brother Chuck on the patio. Mike was having a Sea Dog ($3.99), which is 5 – 6 oz. of beer battered Icelandic Cod on a bed of fresh lettuce, on a foot-long roll (below). This was Mike’s third visit in a week.
Chuck was having a Tuna Steak sandwich ($5.99), a 4 oz. fillet of either pan-seared or char-broiled tuna – cajun, Asian or lemon pepper seasoned – and served on a roll with lettuce, mayo and tomato. Both brothers were happy with their orders and offered a taste, but I headed for the counter instead.
I ordered the Fish Taco ($3.99). Served in a soft tortilla, the battered haddock was crispy and good, and it was all wrapped up with cheddar and cole slaw. Very delicious!
The menu is diverse, with a few chicken and vegan options (Veggie Burger, Portabella Burger), along with a turkey burger, shrimp (skewered, coconut and peel & eat), seafood ravioli, crabcakes, stuffed giant clam shells, calamari, sushi, chowder and daily soups, and “Billy Ogden’s” recipe hot peppers. Jack’s serves fried onion petals and sweet potato fries in addition to traditional fries. Dessert is a fair-style funnel cake topped with powdered sugar or cinnamon.
Open for lunch and dinner, the hours are 11 – 9, Monday through Thursday; 11 – 11, Friday and Saturday, and alas, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see if Chuck, Mike and I know what we’re talking about because Captain Jack’s is closed on Sundays.
