Buffalo ReUse: A Busy Schedule For August

Summer is almost over for some of us.  Thursday in the Square is no more.  School begins again in a couple of weeks.  Now those days in the sun seem to be desperately slipping from our grasp.  Luckily, Buffalo ReUse has you covered.  Their calendar lists what they’re doing, along with the activities of all their other favorite local organizations.

For the month of August, Buffalo ReUse has a jammed packed schedule of free workshops and events to keep you busy.  Not only do they offer free workshops that can help you learn how to replace stairs or insulate the home, but there are also cookouts, Frisbee games, and a night of making Bloody Marys. Clearly, Buffalo ReUse likes to mix work and pleasure.

Remember the community gardens?  Well, they are in full bloom, and ReUse will be helping to celebrate the success of MAP’s Growing Green program as MAP hosts a cookout today at 4PM at 382 Massachusetts Street.

Still hungry?  On Friday, August 7th, there will be a hot dog roast at 84 Harrison Street at 5PM.  Over by 158 Eaton Street, you can enjoy a game of Frisbee and buy a fish fry at 6PM.  The Frisbee and Fish Fry event is held every Friday.

As for Saturday, August 8th, Buffalo ReUse has several activities scheduled throughout the day.  Starting at 11AM, you can head over to 153 Eaton Street to learn how to better control your water usage by constructing your own rain barrel in the Harvesting Rain Workshop.  At 2PM, a workshop in Beekeeping will be offered at Urban Roots on 428 Rhode Island Street.   Later on at 3PM, Buffalo Basics is offering a workshop to learn how to detail your home at 153 Eaton Street.

The rest of August has a variety of workshops available as well.  Urban Roots will host a Rain Gardening workshop on Thursday, August 20th.  Kerri Bentkowski from Buffalo-Niagara Riverkeeper will lead the workshop and provide examples and advice on how to design your very own rain garden.

There are workshops that will prepare you for the inevitable cold weather and teach you how to replace and re-glaze windows or insulate your attic.  Plus, Buffalo ReUse will help you prep your gardens for the following spring.

Also, August will feature some new events as well.  The first children’s workshop will be held to teach children about vermicomposting.  A Lady’s and Men’s Night party will be thrown, featuring an IN-REM auction how-to workshop on financing repairs.

One of the last events of the month will feature a class on canning tomatoes and making Bloody Marys.  Sounds delicious!

Buffalo ReUse has events and workshops scheduled nearly every day — and the workshops are free!  Stop by and visit and while you’re at it, bring a friend!

A copy of the calendar can be found here or at The ReSource at 298 Northampton Street.  More details are on the Buffalo ReUse website.
