The Johnnie B. Wiley Sports Complex, long-neglected and badly in need of attention, will receive the restoration it deserves thanks to a new initiative by the mayor to appoint board members who will decide how the building will be renovated for the future.
Currently, the facility falls inside the jurisdiction of the county, but has been managed by the Buffalo School District per the city/county parks agreement. After an assessment by Dinato Associates, a Request For Proposals (RFP) was issued. The School Board approved a construction contract of $1,967,309 that will be used for new artificial turf, site drainage, lighting, track improvements, and scoreboards for the football, baseball, and soccer fields.
The Buffalo Control Board is yet to approve the proposal.
Notable sports complex board members include former Bill and Pro Football Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas, Benderson Vice President Brett Benderson, Director of Physical Education Dave Thomas, Division for Youth Director Otis T. Barker, Buffalo Bisons General Manager Mike Buczkowski, Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo’s Danielle Judge-Johnson, and others.
The improvements in the JBWSC will be a great asset to the development of athletics in Buffalo.
