Kristin Brandt and Cassondra Argeros grew up 3 miles from each
other in Tonawanda but it wasn’t until years later, in Philly, when they met. Argeros
a glass artist and Brandt a painter connected on many things including a deep
appreciation for their hometown and a driving desire to bring public
art to it.
Inspired by the variety and profusion of public art in
Philadelphia, a city that greatly encourages and supports it, Argeros and
Brandt have put in the sweat equity, dollars and commitment to make their dream
come true. Their vision encompasses an organization that both facilitates
the creation of community public art and acts as a catalyst connecting local
artists with consumers, businesses and institutions seeking specialized arts
services.
Fast forward to June ’09. Having run the gamut of classes in
non-for profit management and grant writing at NCCC and obtained their 501c3
(not for profit status), the Urban Design Project has hit the ground running
with one key understanding in mind. Solid business foundation aside,
according to Brandt, ‘it’s all guerilla’. In other words, in order to
keep your dance card full and inspire people to help, you need chutzpah
and ‘out of the box’ creativity. These girls got it in spades and that’s why
I’m all-in, in my newest incarnation as their director of marketing.
Projects are lining up. Fresh off of the completion of their
first project, a gorgeous and cheerful 9 wall mural in the lobby of the
Family Justice Center, an exterior mural in the drawing stage and research
on another, Kristin and Cass are looking to the community to network,
collaborate and volunteer.
Come schmooze and chat this Friday, June 19th, at 7PM at the
Lafayette Tap Room, as we celebrate the dedication of our inaugural project ‘Erie
County Through the Seasons’ and all the people who helped make it happen. Join
us for free food, music, art and 50/50 split raffles as we connect, raise funds
and inspire community in this great big canvas we call our home.
Raffled artwork includes: paintings by Kristin Brandt, glasswork
art by Cassondra Argeros, mixed media by Lukia Costello and more.
