On Wednesday, June 24th, at 7:00PM the Elmwood shoe store Shoefly will be holding its second annual Stiletto Run, in collaboration with Celebrate Buffalo Inc. Part of the proceeds from the event will benefit The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance. The .5K race and starts at the corner of Bidwell Avenue and Elmwood Avenue and ends in front of ShoeFly and Delish Bakery on Elmwood.
Registration for the run will start at 5:30PM. Pre-registration is $25, and $30 on the day of the event. The first, second, and third place winners will receive prizes, but there’s a catch; in order to be eligible to receive these prices, runners must be registered and run in shoes with a minimum heel height of three inches. The race will be limited to three hundred participants.
Sue Marfino is the owner of Shoefly, the host of this event. She started this event last year to coincide with Shoefly’s reopening in a new location on Elmwood. She says that she decided to hold this benefit for The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance because, “I wanted to work with a good national organization, and focus on an issue affecting women’s health.” According to The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance’s website, “Each year, approximately 20,000 American women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and about 15,000 women die of the disease.”
This year Shoefly has teamed up with Celebrate Buffalo Inc. to host this event because, according to Sue Marfino “We can combine resources and expand the event. We can make it bigger than something I could handle on my own.”
Several shops and restaurants on will stay open late on the day of the race, and will donate 10% of their sales to ovarian cancer research. For additional information about The Stiletto Run, participating store locations, or to register, visit www.stilettorun.org or stop by ShoeFly at 801 Elmwood Avenue. Donations are also accepted through the website. Volunteers for the event are also needed, if interested e-mail, shoeflyny@verizon.net.
