In
a couple of weeks, four districts in Buffalo will begin to look a lot more
colorful with the advent of colorful banners, each supporting different causes.
The
Salvation Army, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, will let their banners wave on Main Street between Goodrich and Allen, from May 30th until September 1st. The Salvation Army organization works toward the
greater good of the underserved by providing services with the intent on
building character, confidence and the aptitude for excellence. Disaster services, after school
programs, emergency shelter services and affordable thrift stores are only a
small sample of what the Salvation Army offers to the public in need.
The
Allentown Association will also be hanging their banners starting on June 11th
through June 16th with the hopes of advertising the Allen West Festival. The Allentown Association has dedicated
itself for the past four decades to promoting, enhancing and protecting
Allentown’s unique historic surroundings and commitment to diversity and beauty, as the area is one of the best examples of urbanism in Western New York. As such, the association will be
holding the Allen West Festival, which will take place around the same time as
the Allentown Art Festival. It is
an arts and crafts festival as well, and will be located on Allen Street from
Elmwood to Days Park at Wadsworth Street.
The festival will encompass local artists, musicians and street
performers in the bohemian section of the area, which has been compared to
Manhattan’s Greenwich Village many times.
The
Ira Ross Aerospace Museum will also be hanging some banners to build awareness
and increase traffic to the museum starting from June 1st to December
31st. The museum recently
celebrated its grand opening from May 23rd to the 25th. It dedicates itself to exploring the
rich Western New York aviation history, from the first break-throughs in the
area to the latest innovations.
The museum staff has been working for over a decade to find any relevant
artifact for the opening of the museum and have acquired things such as the first
U.S. commercially licensed helicopter and the actual control panel used by a
mission controller during the Apollo moon missions.
Starting on June 1st, banners will be displayed along Elmwood Avenue from
Pride Buffalo as part of their 19th annual parade, taking place this year on June 6th.
Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy also received permission
to hang banners on South Park Avenue at the entrance of the Botanical Gardens
and Abbott Road in support of the Picnic in the Park, which will be held at
Cazenovia Park on Friday, June 5th from 4PM to 8PM.
