Fashion
students at Buffalo State College will finally be able to show off a semester’s worth
of hard work on garments they’ve designed to fall in line with the exhibit at
the Burchfield Penney’s East Gallery. The event, Runway 2.0, is slotted for
Saturday, April 25th.
The
designers have been creating men’s and women’s pieces that connect with the
notion of the “Romance of Urban Decay,” which is the current exhibition at the
gallery.
One student, Tiffany, took herself on a self-guided tour of
She spotted lots of gargoyles and griffins sitting atop buildings, and from
those sights, she pulled the idea of feathers. She incorporated quite a few feathers
into her three-piece collection that she showed off in a YouTube video put up
by the Fashion Student Association at
Another student designer, Julia, whose interview is also up, found
inspiration in what some may see as the more dingy and dirty parts of the city’s
decay. She walked the city and found beauty and romantic decay in cracks,
broken glass and peeling paint, and found it all very alluring. She applied her
point-of-view to her collection by hand painting one evening dress in her
collection.
The show will have the works: a raised runway winding through the East
Gallery, paparazzi, a Ryan Seacrest-like character working the red carpet,
strobe lights, and live music by Them Jazzbeards.
“The day
exemplifies the potential and power of collaboration between the college and
the Burchfield Penney,” said Technology Lecturer Erin Habes, who produced last
year’s student fashion show at the
exciting day. We hope everyone will dress to the nines and be awed by the
collections, the space and the entertainment.”
